60th Anniversary of the Cable Car to Velika Planina
Zg. postaja nihalke na Veliki planini
When: from 19.12.2024, 16:00 to 19.12.2035, 00:00
The exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the cable car to Velika Planina was created in collaboration with the Velika Planina company and our museum. It is displayed at the upper cable car station at Šimnovec.
Through three panels, the exhibition explains how the residents of Kamnik dreamed about and drafted plans for the cable car nearly 100 years ago. These dreams came true on September 13, 1964, when the president of the Kamnik OLO, France Vidervol, cut the ceremonial ribbon, officially opening the cable car. This milestone made Velika Planina accessible even to those who otherwise would never have been able to visit it.
Before the cable car was constructed, a freight cable lift operated on the plateau, significantly contributing to the development of a larger tourist settlement at Za Gradiščem and Na Jamah. By 1962, nearly 50 cottages had been built, architecturally inspired by the traditional shepherd’s huts on Veliki Stan.
The panels showcase the development of tourism, from the first hikers, mountaineers, and mountain enthusiasts to present-day visitors. The exhibition highlights the uniqueness of Velika Planina, celebrated for its distinctive oval shepherd’s architecture, unparalleled in the Alpine world.
On the staircase where visitors wait for their departure from the plateau, gondola cabins are attractively designed, featuring interesting facts, the first gondola tickets, and a preserved cable car operator’s bag from the 1970s. Additionally, the Skodla storage area contains wooden skis and poles from the 1930s, now displayed on the wall in the hallway of the waiting room at the upper cable car station.
You are warmly invited to visit the exhibition.
