Miha Maleš’ illustration of the Prešeren Wreath of Sonnets
Among the important painters of the last century in Slovenia, Miha Maleš paid the greatest attention to the image of our greatest Slovene poet – France Prešeren. With his original illustration, he was accompanied by a number of Prešeren’s verses and as the most important artistic accompaniment of his poetry, a series of thirty engravings dedicated to the Sonnet Wreath was embroidered in our consciousness. The first edition, black and white version, was published by Maleš publishing house in Ljubljana in 1937, twenty years later, in 1959, while in the fauvist spirit, a second print was published in the Lipa publishing house in Koper. Graphic sheets for this second edition represent the core of a visiting exhibition.
Artistic historian Bred Ilich Klančnik and artist’s daughter Travica Maleš Grešak will speak about the artist. We will set up the exhibition on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the death of France Prešeren (1800-1849).
