Who hasn’t heard of the mammoth from Nevlje near Kamnik? It is the most complete skeleton of this enormous prehistoric animal found in Slovenia, now displayed at the Slovenian Museum of Natural History.
Following its accidental discovery on March 14, 1938, exceptionally modern and precise excavations were carried out, attracting significant public interest. The exhibition by the Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik, prepared by Janja Železnikar in 2008 to mark the 70th anniversary of the discovery, presents the history and course of research in Nevlje across ten panels. It also explores the development and distribution of these impressive but sadly extinct creatures. The exhibition further depicts the time and conditions of the last Pleistocene glaciation in Europe through the perspective of our Ice Age ancestors—hunters who lived alongside the mammoths. It illustrates what they hunted and ate, how they dressed, and the tools and objects they used in daily life.
Among the exhibited materials are letters from Dr. Fran Kos, who led the excavation and research of the mammoth skeleton, sent to Dr. Srečko Brodar, one of Slovenia’s leading experts on the Ice Age.
In addition to the panels and documents, visitors will also be able to see skeletal remains of mammoths and other Ice Age animals. These remains have been part of the Celje Regional Museum’s collection for decades but are rarely displayed.
You are warmly invited to visit the exhibition!
